5/12/24 Principal Newsletter
Dear Parent, Student, and Educator,
This week we have a full week for students and teachers, with an early out Wednesday.
Happy Mother’s Day and Nurse Appreciation Week! This is the seniors' last week of school!
As I reflect on Mother’s Day, I am reminded that each student at our school is someone’s child, and we have a great responsibility to care for your children and help them to have a good school experience. Thank you for sharing your children with us. We have such wonderful students at Glenwood High School. Just the other day, as I was carrying in items for teacher appreciation, students without being asked helped me to hold the door and carry in items to the office. That leadership in even small gestures does not go unnoticed!
This week is also special to me, as my mother was also a school nurse while I was growing up, and I frequently visited her office, which was connected to the principal’s office. The principal would ask me if I ever wanted to be a principal. Sometimes we don’t realize the influence moments like this have on our future until down the road. Be sure to thank our school nurses this week! Thank you to Mrs. Emma Sathern and Mrs. Jennifer May!
Celebrating Good Things at GHS: Recently, our high school received some unofficial, preliminary results back from ISASP testing. Our students' scores are showing the highest performance in high school history since 2019! Thank you parents, students, teachers, and staff for your support of Glenwood Schools and helping us to aspire to greater levels of excellence!
As ISASP Results continue to come in, we will be recognizing student achievement.
Congratulations to the Sophomore class for demonstrating the highest level of achievement in the number of students with advanced and proficient scores in math and reading, and incredible growth in science this year! These students will be receiving a special lunch on Friday this week, May 17th and be able to eat in the courtyard (weather permitting) during their lunch hour.
Capturing Kids’ Hearts Data: See here for data. Results from our recent survey from parents, teachers, and students are showing that we are making gains in increased communication at the high school and creating a welcoming environment for adults. We still have some work to do with growth in student data. This will be one of our goal areas next school year: to increase opportunities for student input, leadership, and involvement in creating a great school community! Thank you for your input on school performance & improvement.
Student leadership in creating a positive school: An example of how we engage students as leaders in creating a positive school environment is our Junior Buddies Program and Senior Ambassadors. The Junior Buddy program serves the purpose of helping future freshmen prepare for high school. They will be taking part in a panel discussion in 8th grade Language Arts classes on Monday, May 13, and giving tours of GHS to groups of 8th graders on Friday, May 17. Next year, these same students will be our "Senior Ambassadors," assisting beginning of the year activities and serving as a familiar, friendly face to help the new ninth grade students. See below and this link for more pictures of student leaders.
Senior Reminders: This is the seniors last week of school. See this link for details about each day in your final week of school leading up to commencement. Students and parents, please read these commencement instructions.
